Do not attempt Facebook login from here.

The new theme here on The Rebel Squid might falsely lead some visitors to believe their Facebook login page is only a click away, but I’m not worried. Know why? Because this place is way better. You aren’t putting your reputation on the line, as there is zero risk of facebook poking arrest when you hang out here. (More …)

Looks like a Bavarian blog. Gives me the the homesick jeebies. Can I poke you with a pretzel stick? Status update: me busy opening a Bavarian restaurant in Austin. Everything looks white & blue to me. I’ve been reading this blog. Like always.

Yes! I love pretzels. Why are Bavarian blogs white & blue?

    • Chef Keem 11:47 pm on November 15, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Bavarian blogs are not necessarily white & blue, but w & b are the Bavarian colors. You’re welcome.

I don’t suppose I could hit you up for a soft pretzel recipe? It needs to be something I can manage with minimal kitchen supplies and space. If you’ve got a recipe posted somewhere, please share the link in this thread. Thank you.

There’s a pretzel recipe in my lens about Bavarian breakfast foods: http://www.squidoo.com/bavarian-breakfast

Perfect! Not too complicated, and they look delicious. Thanks. :)

w00t! I’m glad someone is trying out this fun theme. Oh, and not that I could possibly outdo Le Chef, but I know there’s a pretzel recipe somewhere on my Oktoberfest lens. Includes some easy dips to go along as well. Achtung, shameles plug coming: http://www.squidoo.com/oktoberfest

Word… and I’ll bet you thought you wouldn’t get much use out of that lens after October. ;)

Lordy, what good is my plug if I’m too stupid to type in the correct link? Oh well, serves me right! :) Now let me go put some moth balls on that lens…

WikiHow thinks all Squidoo links are spam.

It seems that wikiHow and Squidoo don’t mix. I discovered this when I wrote my first wikiHow article. Like the innocent enthusiast I can be when I don’t watch it, I thought it would be great to link to one of my relevant lenses (which also happens to be one of my best, and not a bad source of information on its topic, in my perhaps-not-so-humble opinion). Denied! (More …)

There’s been plenty of controversy over Squidoo’s ad campaigns – especially the expanding header, the text links and some of the junk popping up in the side bar. It’s hard to blame HQ for trying to increase revenues for themselves and for lensmasters. If this, however, leads to the shunning of Squidoo on other platforms, the chase for the buck might end up being a bullet in our own tentacles.

Looking forward to your gathered thoughts. :)

I think a lot of lensmasters have questions & concerns about the direction in which Squidoo is heading… though most probably are afraid to voice those concerns. Kudos to you for finding that courage.

We all work hard on our lenses and it really is sad to see the hypocrisy of Squidoo…they claim a zero tolerance of spam, yet dozens of lenses in the top tiers are low quality trashy spam…I can easily see why WikiHow would ban Squidoo in it’s entirety. I would love to see this as a wake up call for Squidoo, unfortunately I doubt it will be.

Thanks to both of you for the comments. I do think Squidoo is a little too focused on “the chase for the buck,” as ChefKeem so aptly described it. I don’t think it’s possible to make fast cash on the internet without losing credibility, and I’m not sure why the powers-that-be on Squidoo can’t seem to recognize this. Perhaps they are under a lot of pressure to show ROI?

I’m sure everyone who has seen “Rah-Rah” memos to the community has seen the build these quality lenses statements that are bookended by the let’s crank those lenses out comments.

Traffic is up an exponential amount this year over the previous three, as Megan so graciously showed us in September. But, there are complaints from lensmasters that payouts are down.

Are the as campaigns not working? Probably. Overkill comes to mind.

I think there is another problem as well. It may be desperation because of the depth of “the dip”.

Cranking out fresh content is how Squidoo is remaining in the top 500 sites month to month. Cranking out poorly created fresh content is why Time Spent On Site is down 11%, Bounce Rate is up 5%, and Page Views Per User is down 12%.

Truth be known, spam is a judgment call. I have put this through a litmus test of sorts and found wide variety of opinions, but there is an official rule in the recently updated Squidoo TOS that disturbs me. The 9 direct link rule is ludicrous. Even some of the spammiest of marketing gurus will teach the rule of thumb being 3 links.

Wow, I need something to do so I can quit writing articles in comment boxes.

I haven’t tried posting anything on WikiHow so I can’t speak from personal experience. Intrigued by your post, I checked out the site and read about their external link policy. They do have a Spam Blacklist of links that get removed, it’s found here: http:// www. wikihow.com/Spam-Blacklist (remove spaces in URL)

For the Squidoo domain I saw only one particular lens that was on this list (powerwheels7), which doesn’t exist anymore. My guess is that if it was indeed spam it probably got deleted by Squidoo already. It still shows as having 95 backlinks so it must have existed at some point.

Since the wiki pages can be edited by anyone there is also the possibility that someone has just deleted your link self-righteously (is that even a word?), or that the manner in which the link was posted didn’t agree with the WikiHow linking policy.

For example, I found a live link to a Squidoo lenses on this wikihow article at least at the time of this writing):

      http:// www. wikihow.com/Prepare-for-a-Police-Patrol-As-a-Policeman

Several articles mention their lenses without hyperlinking them. This might still deliver some occasional traffic to your lens, although it doesn’t give you one of the coveted backlinks, of course.

I see a lot of “discussions” going on there which seem to indicate that this site has a lot of immature audiences which could just get a kick of messing up other’s articles. Unless you got an official message from their staff I did not see anything that implies that links to Squidoo are generally blacklisted.

Maybe we can do our own experiments with this site. I haven’t heard of it before but it could be a good source of some extra traffic. Or has anyone had adverse experience with wikihow?

Alex: “The 9 direct link rule is ludicrous. Even some of the spammiest of marketing gurus will teach the rule of thumb being 3 links.”

Yeah, what’s up with that?! How could anyone possibly need 9 links to the same domain, anyway? If you’re using a lens to promote your blog or website, it’s obviously silly to link to 9 different locations within that site.

Anne: Thanks so much for all the wikiHow info!

My Squidoo link was caught by their spam filter before I could publish it, so I know there was something going on other than overzealous user editing. I never got a message from admin about it, though… not sure what that was about, if the link isn’t blacklisted. Maybe a bug in the wikiHow publishing thingie?
