Environmentally Friendly Halloween Lights nominated for Giant Squid Award!

OMG – that’s Oh My Gosh – my Squidoo lens Environmentally Friendly Halloween Lights has been nominated for a Giant Squid Award! Whaaaat??? In the Green category? After all it is one of my Going Green Ideas lenses.

Errrr……no, in the Best Holiday Lens category!

When you look at all the better than excellent Halloween lenses on Squidoo, I am gobsmacked – to use one of my quaint English expressions – that my lens was picked out.

To be nominated is such an honour and I just do not know how the Giant Squid Organisers, Bonnie and Robin, managed to sift through so many lenses and come up with such an extensive list. Not only do I feel honoured but I also feel truly humble to be appearing among so many great Lensmasters, who have taught me so much over these last 18 months.

I am also proud that one of my fav lenses has also been nominated - Christmas at AJ’s in the About Me category, but I say more about that in my other blog: Always Juggling on Squidoo.

Thank you Bonnie and Robin!

Going Green Ideas on Zazzle

Over the last couple of weeks I have had fun and frustrations setting up my new Zazzle store: AJ and Family. It has taken quite a lot of time organising the store and setting up categories and I must admit I have been quite shy about promoting it, to the extent that I have not even made a Squidoo lens about it yet!

Some of the artwork I have seen on Zazzle is awesome (and I don’t use that word very often) and I don’t know how on earth we can compete. But I guess it is all about creating your own style and niche.

One of my categories is Going Green and within that category I have a section called Sustainable Products, where I will only showcase the products made on organic or sustainable materials. The range of sustainable products that Zazzle makes available is limited but I am hoping that this will increase.

Going Green on Zazzle as well as Squidlog and Squidoo

I am continuing to develop my theme of Going Green Ideas in my new Zazzle store. It is taking awhile to bring all my “Going Green Ideas” together in a series of blogs, articles and lenses but I am finally making progress.

So far I have:

My next task is to design an image that hopefully people will use to link any lenses or blogs that I feature to the posts on here and then I guess I ought to make more Green lenses. Oh AND a Zazzle lens of course!!

How to have a Green Christmas!

Twelve Days of a Green and Ethical Christmas was first published in November 2008 as I wanted to promote having an eco-friendly Christmas. I was utterly gob-smacked (one of my quaint English phrases) when on 01 December it was awarded Lens of the Day. Wow o Wow!!

Recently thanks to feedback from some Squidoo Giants, I have completely restyled the lens. And just in the last 24 hours Squidoo has released a couple of new seasonal templates that suit it very well.

The lens is full of information as to why we should make more eco-friendly choices when doing our Christmas shopping and there’s links to my favourite Fair trade Christmas present suppliers both in the US (Gifts with Humanity) and the UK (Ethical Superstore), where you can buy your environmentally friendly Christmas gifts.

If we all just make a few changes and some different choices we can all make valuable steps towards a more sustainable enviroment. So what will you be doing to have a Green Christmas?

Going green ideas – a new lens from AJ

All this blogging about going green on Squidoo and finally I realised that I have enough “green” lenses for a Lensography and Going Green Ideas was the result.

Going Green Ideas will be a place where I can organise my eco-friendly lenses. I have not made many Lensographies but they will become increasingly important in helping me manage my lenses as the number increases – 63 to date.

I often wonder how Lensmasters with over 100 lenses keep track!

Best Plants for Bees – another Green Squidoo lens with a Purple Star

European honey bee extracts nectar 300x237 Best Plants for Bees another Green Squidoo lens with a Purple Star

European honey bee

Internationally more and more people are taking an interest in the causes of the decline of the Honeybee and bees in general. As a keen gardener, who also enjoys attracting wildlife to her garden, I am always looking for ways to improve the conditions for the birds, honeybees and small animals that visit our backyard.

In the early Summer 2009 I published a Squidoo lens: The 10 Best Plants for Bees, which promotes planting flowering shrubs to help the bees. I was thrilled to be awarded a Purple Star for the lens on 09 July 2009.

Just recently I read about a £1m ($1.6m) grant that has been awarded to a Rothamsted, a British Research Institution and Warwick University to examine the reasons for the decline of the honeybee and information has been added to the lens.

Squidoo Purple Star awarded for my Eco-friendly Halloween Lens!

purplestar Squidoo Purple Star awarded for my Eco friendly Halloween Lens!Yesterday I got a great surprise! An email from the Giant Squid Organisers to say that my Squidoo Lens Environmentally Friendly Halloween Lights has been awarded the huge honour of a Squidoo Purple Star.

This lens was not as easy to make as I thought it would be. Well, it got made easily enough but there was a delay. I applied to an affiliate via Share a Sale.com who was selling exactly the sort of environmentally friendly Halloween Lights I was looking for, only to be turned down!

It’s never happened before and I must admit I was stunned. Never one to give up (yep, I can be very stubborn at times, well I am on the cusp with Taurus) I went to the supplier’s main website and emailed them.

I ever so politely explained that I was desperate to be able to recommend their products because they were the only supplier I had found with exactly the lights I was looking for and would they please check out my lenses and would they please reconsider?

Oh alright then, they said. Sorted!

Then the folowing week I got turned down by another affiliate. I have yet to tackle that one BUT I am wondering if it was the Squidoo URL I used that put them off?

I don’t have a website (yet), so I either use my Lensmaster Bio page or one of my Lensographies when I apply for an affiliate program. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Well I had heard of peroxide blond but not hydrogen peroxide mouthwash!

Lensmaster Cleanerlife (Dan) is establishing a great reputation for publishing very well researched lenses on not your normal run of the mill topics. And it is especially encouraging to me as a Squidoo Angel who watches over the Health and Medicine category on Squidoo, that he sometimes publishes lenses that fit in to this topic.

I was intrigued by the title of one of Dan’s lenses: Why you may want to try Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash. Hydrogen peroxide? In mouthwash? Whaaaaaat?

Isn’t that the stuff that “bleached blonds” use on their hair. Isn’t it a very strong chemical?

Well, yes, it is. But used in tiny quantities, Dan tells us that Hydrogen Peroxide is:

a safe alternative to popular brands of antiseptic mouthwashes

and gives enough info and links on the lens to convince us that he is right.

While we are talking about mouths, Dan has another lens that also makes important, and very worrying, reading for anyone who uses non-natural toothpaste. What Everybody Ought to Know About All Natural Toothpaste is full of some real horror stories!

If you want to make your own natural toothpaste then there is a recipe on my lens: Janey lee Grace.

But in the meantime, check out Dan’s lenses, there’s some great topics and they make for interesting reading.

What's in a name and Carrie White's "green" lenses on Squidoo

Lensmaster InksErotica What's in a name and Carrie White's "green" lenses on SquidooToday I have been looking at Carrie’s lens list as I know she has at least one lens that I could feature on here.

A few months back, while I was Editor of the Imperfectly Natural website, owned by BBC radio personality Janey Lee Grace, I was looking for an article to feature on a page called: “What really works”. I then remembered Carrie’s excellent lens on Mooncups and she did a feature for the site, which I was then able to link to her lens.

Today I returned to Carrie’s bio to see if she had written any other lenses that would fit in with the topic of this blog and indeed she has. Like me, Carrie suffers from Sinusitis and I was interested to read that Carrie recommends using a 100% natural remedy Olbas Oil on a regular basis to help avoid developing Sinusitus and also to relieve symptoms associated with allergies, colds and flu.

Would I buy this product from a Lensmaster calling themselves “Olbas Oil Expert” or “Cure sinusitis”? What do you think?

No! I would rather buy my sinusitis relief from a Lensmaster called Inks Erotica, because I have got to know Carrie on Squidoo and I trust her recommendations.

Hmmmm, methinks there’s a lesson in here somewhere!

AJ is going green on Squidoo!

Well here I are! A new blog and what on earth is AJ going to blog about on here, I hear you ask? What with writing articles for SquidLog and two other blogs….. To be honest when I signed up on here, I did not have the slightest clue what I would be blogging about, other than it had to be Squidoo related.

However, a conversation with my Hubby this evening decided it for me. I was telling him how my newest lens had shot up the Lens rankings to #1134 in only 48 hours. I remarked on how I ought to cover more environmentally friendly topics on Squidoo because it is something we both passionately believe in and yes, we actually do know a bit about it – after all my hubby does work in that field – pun intended, ha ha!

Since starting on Squidoo I have managed to publish a few “green” lenses and add a very eco-friendly slant  to some of my “holiday” lenses including: Valentine’s Day, Twelve Days of a Green and Ethical Christmas and my very latest offering Environmentally Friendly Halloween Lights so this Blog will focus on “Going Green on Squidoo”.

Sorted!
