Although we have the ability to sell Amazon products through the Amazon modules on Squidoo, I wanted to start a discussion about becoming a direct affiliate for Amazon. To start off, the web address for the affiliate program is https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/ for the U.S. Amazon. This is the main Amazon website, and the majority of customers use this website. However, you can also sign up for Amazon UK and several other countries.
I am going to talk about the U.S. Amazon program, although the programs in other countries are similar, and I can answer some of the questions about them.
The way the Amazon Associates program works is that you earn 4% of the sale price for every item that ships during a calendar month until you get to 7 items. Once you get to 7 items, it goes up to 6% for all that has shipped. And you can earn up to 8.5% on most items if you get enough sales. There are some exceptions both below and above the regular commission structure which you can read on the site.
Amazon has a very short cookie. Essentially the customer needs to purchase their items from the first click off your page for you to earn any commission. That makes Amazon hard to convert.
Here is the information about the duration of a session:
“A “Session” begins when a customer clicks through a Special Link on your site to the Amazon Site and ends upon the first to occur of the following: (x) 24 hours elapses from the customer’s initial click-through; (y) the customer places an order for a Product that is not a Digital Product; or (z) the customer follows a link to the Amazon Site that is formatted with an Associate’s tag that is not assigned to you.”
On the plus side Amazon has just about everything in the world for sale. So it is easy to find items that will relate to your topics.
The Amazon affiliate program causes a dilemma for some people because they feel that if they bypass the Squidoo Amazon affiliate modules they are stealing money from Squidoo. I have felt this dilemma myself and have solved it by alternating the Squidoo modules and direct Amazon links. However, I also use the Amazon affiliate program on other sites and blogs.
Amazon pays out once a month, about 60 days after the items ship. Their payout threshold is $10.00 if you have a U.S. bank account and direct deposit. It is $100 for a printed check.
Amazon is a useful affiliate program to have. You need to get a lot of traffic to get sales, but you will get sales.
