Since it is the beginning of the year, I decided that we should review some basic writing online concepts for people who need a review. And all of us can use a review from time to time, to remind us not to forget the basics.
One of the most important concepts for writing and earning online is that you need to keep your topics small, and that will get you more traffic instead of less traffic. It is a bit counter intuitive, so sometimes it takes new writers a while to get it.
When you write on Squidoo, you will often here lensmasters talking about their niche. Essentially that means that they have a writing specialty. A writer most often has more than one niche, but some writers only have one niche that they focus on. A niche is a very narrow focused topic. For instance, if you love gardening, your niche might be container gardening, community gardening, or organic vegetable gardening. A niche is not gardening alone. That is way too broad of a topic. Experienced lensmasters will confirm that the more you write in specific narrow niche topics, the better you will do for both traffic and earnings on Squidoo.
A niche can be as small as one author’s book series. For instance, I could write at least 10 lenses on Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse books, and the related True Blood television series. In each lens, I would focus on a different aspect of the series. Possibilities for dividing this up could be by characters, by books, by TV show seasons, by vampire lore, by supernatural creatures on the show, and by travel to Louisiana. There are so many topics that can be derived from this one niche topic.
So when you come up with ideas for writing lenses, dig deeply for lens topics. How many ways can you divide a subject to create a new page? This is one of the most critical basics of writing online. When you can do this on a regular basis, you will have learned a very large step in becoming an online writer.
