Public Lens Critique

Learning to Fly

I wanted to bring your attention to a new feature on SquidU that I am doing called the Public Lens Critiques. This started in the Giant Challenge Ning, but since the Giant Challenge is not on the Ning anymore, we decided to move the critique to SquidU.

This critique is not meant for brand new newbies, but for lensmasters with some time under their belt. I am picking and choosing the lenses both from lenses people ask me to critique, and if no one does, I will most likely just randomly pick and choose.

The idea is for everyone to learn from each other, and to turn good lenses to great lenses with good SEO potential. And of course, sometimes a second pair of eyes picks up on things that you miss after revising your own work numerous times.

The first critique is here. If you would like your own lens critiqued, contact me via my contact me button on Squidoo.

I made this with the free image mosaic generator from adelaider.com – and so can you. Definitely. (No sign-up required! Upload your pic and they do the work. Then download to your computer. Free too.)

Thanks, Mimi, for tweeting about this!

Make Your Own Book With Blurb.com

12:09 pm in Cool Stuff by Chef Keem

We’ve heard about Lulu.com and other print-on-demand (POD) companies. Blurb.com seems to differentiate itself by offering fancier book editions along with a few lower-priced options.

They offer a free bookmaking software download which might make the formatting process easier than with other outfits.

I haven’t used blurb.com yet, but I like the fact that their software is also available for Mac. (And PC, of course!)

Check it out and let me know what you think about it. Go to blurb.com

Make Your Own Handwriting Font!

4:57 pm in Cool Stuff, Featured by Chef Keem

Neat-oh! Your handwriting as a regular font – that’s so cool!

(Further down I’ll tell you where you can download a FREE trial version of a full-blown font creator. First about the handwriting font tool…)

They talked about this on the local news this morning and I had to check it out as soon as I had time:

YourFonts.com – add a personal touch to your computer!

Here’s what you do when you’re on this site:

1. Print template
2. Fill in the characters with your own handwriting
3. Scan and save template
4. Upload template
5. Preview font for free and if you like it you can…
6. Download to your computer (for a mere $9.95)
7. Install and use

The site offers clear and detailed instructions for every step of the way. It’s easy!

I had one tiny problem, though – the .pdf printout wouldn’t show the bottom border and render the template useless. I had to download the template file as an image (there’s a link on the site for that as well), and then it worked fine.

Make sure your characters are within the parameters of the boxes and don’t forget to center them. This is important for the correct letter spacing of your printed handwriting.

I might have to do mine again, but here’s what I’ve got, so far:

As I’ve announced at the beginning of this post, here is the link to fontcreator.com where you can play with a FREE trial version of their software.
